Lin Shih-Pao: From Recycling to the Peace Bell
Love and hope continue in Taiwan through humanitarian art. 👉 Support the Peace Bell campaign on GoFundMe: https://gofund.me/780455db
Returning to Taiwan, Carrying a Mission
In 2025, Lin returned to Taiwan to launch the Peace Bell fundraising campaign. The goal is to raise NT$2.1 million (approximately USD $65,000, excluding shipping) to cast the first Peace Bell in Taiwan.
Originally, the idea was to forge a Peace Bell from recycled missile shells. However, because the metal material cannot produce a clear ringing sound, the decision was made to build a bell in Taiwan — one that can ring out fully. This bell will be transported to Ukraine and installed in the Peace Art Park, a site that Shield Art Foundation began developing with Marhanets City in 2025, where it will stand as a landmark of peace and hope. Once this project is complete, a second Peace Bell will be cast in Ukraine, using missile debris, as a symbol of transforming war’s remnants into peace.
Even while fundraising, Lin continues his daily paintings in Taipei, often working in cafés around the Minsheng community. He says strangers sometimes approach him, curious about his work, and he gladly shares the story of humanitarian art — how each phase of his painting journey represents not just art, but action.
Shared Values, Shared Commitment
As part of the Peace Bell campaign, Lin visited Mr. Chang Shui-Tian, Chairman of Guan Hong Construction, in Taoyuan. Despite working in different fields, the two found common ground in their philosophies.
Chairman Chang has long promoted green energy eco-architecture — recycling materials, harvesting rainwater, storing energy, and building communities rooted in cultural heritage. Lin’s practice of transforming recycled materials into art mirrors this spirit of sustainability.
This shared vision inspired Chairman Chang to support the Peace Bell project wholeheartedly, even inviting his employees to participate in selecting artworks. The fundraising response was enthusiastic and encouraging.
A Symbol Beyond Politics
“The Peace Bell is not a political symbol,” Lin emphasizes.
“It is a humanitarian art action that transcends culture, nationality, and politics. When the bell rings, it will carry Taiwan’s blessing to the world, proving that love and hope can continue to be passed on.”
With every painting, every donation, and every conversation, Lin’s mission continues: to turn art into action, and to ensure that the sound of peace will one day ring across Ukraine and beyond.
