Why Is a Taiwanese Artist Fight for Ukraine?
“When I saw Ukraine under attack, I saw Taiwan. I decided to jump on the horse and use my art as a sword to stand and fight for peace.”
About The Founder
Lin Shih Pao is a Taiwanese- American artist whose work spans four decades across Taiwan, Japan, and New York. He is known for turning ordinary, discarded objects into extraordinary public sculptures — using art to inspire, provoke thought, and bring people together.
Lin has received more than 20 international art awards, including the top prize at the prestigious Japan-France Art Exhibition and recognition from the United Nations as an “Outstanding Contemporary Artist.” His large-scale works have been showcased at iconic venues worldwide, including the World Trade Center in New York, the World Expo in Japan, Flushing Town Hall, and major art museums across the globe.
Why We Support One Painting One Prayer
“I have known Lin for more than 20 years, and what impresses me most is not only his artistic brilliance but his unrelenting perseverance. He spent two decades collecting 33,000 used New York Metro Cards to create a series of Zodiac sculptures; he gathered 25,000 discarded phones from over 40 countries across five years to construct an F1-inspired car. And now, through his unwavering commitment to painting daily for Ukraine, he continues to show how art can be a force for good in the world.
I warmly invite you to stand with us in supporting this meaningful endeavor. Together, we can help bring healing, hope, and a renewed future to Ukraine.”
Our Story and Impact
When the War Began in 2022
In February 2022, Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine. On that day, Lin Shih Pao made a choice: he would use his art as a daily act of solidarity. He began One Painting One Prayer, creating one original watercolor every day — each carrying his prayer for peace and sold to raise funds for Ukraine.
Delivering Medical Aid in 2022
Later that year, Lin traveled to Poland with partner organization STUF to donate ambulances and hospital beds to Ukraine. He wanted to cross into the country, but because of the war, entry was denied. Still, his determination to help never wavered.
The Birth of Shield Art Foundation
Seeing Lin’s persistence, Thomas Chen, Chairman of Crystal Window, encouraged him to establish a nonprofit so his mission could grow. In 2023, the Shield Art Foundation became a registered 501(c)(3), turning daily paintings into real humanitarian aid.
Reaching the Frontline in 2023
In 2023, our founder, Lin Shih Pao, led a Taiwanese team into eastern Ukraine to bring direct support where it was needed most. Lin and the team worked closely with local communities to make a lasting impact:
Lin traveled to the frontlines, meeting with mayors of multiple cities to understand the most urgent local needs.
Delivered essential supplies to orphanages and conducted art therapy workshops to support children’s emotional well-being.
Assisted a specialized hospital in establishing a bakery workshop, helping children with special needs gain practical vocational skills.
Formed partnerships with Ukrainian nonprofit organizations to strengthen long-term community support.
The Peace Bell Project
While visiting Ukraine in 2023, Lin began working with local partners to collect missile debris. His goal: to forge four tons of this material into a two-meter Peace Bell in Marhanets City. Painted on the 24th of each month, the Peace Bell symbolizes the day when peace will finally ring across Ukraine.
Spreading the Mission Worldwide
To raise vital funds for Ukraine, Lin has traveled across the world with exhibitions and public talks, sharing the vision of One Painting One Prayer. Through these events, his daily paintings have reached collectors in the U.S., Europe, and Asia, turning art into tangible support.
Supporting Communities on the Frontlines
During his 2023 visit to Ukraine, Lin Shih Pao witnessed firsthand the struggles of smaller cities like Marhanets, which lacked the resources to safely remove missile debris and maintain basic sanitation. Responding to this urgent need, Shield Art Foundation donated two heavy-duty garbage trucks in 2024 and 2025. These trucks are now clearing war-damaged streets, safely transporting hazardous debris, and helping the community restore essential services—giving residents the tools to rebuild daily life with dignity, safety, and hope.
How It Works: One Painting, $500 of Impact
Each painting from One Painting One Prayer is worth $500. Crystal Foundation covers $200, so donors only pay $300. That means every painting sold becomes $500 in aid — helping us send supplies, rebuild, and bring hope to Ukraine.
